  • Choosing A Cable | Cardas Audio

We make a wide variety of cables, each with its own sonic characteristics. The right cable can greatly add to your stereo's performance. Choosing the right cable can be daunting. We're here to help by phone or email, but this page will help you get started down the right path. Top Choosing A Cable Choosing A Cable Essay Summary Of Cardas Cables Tech Support / Product Questions Choosing A Cable The best source of guidance in cable selection is to talk with us directly, either by phone or email. Our tech specialist, Brian Von Bork, can be reached during business hours (US Pacific time) Monday through Friday, at 541-347-2484. Or send an email to support@cardas.com . Or if you’re more of a “form guy”, fill out the form at this link. But maybe it's outside of business hours, and you just want a general idea of how to pick a Cardas cable. And that's why you're here. On this page we’ll present our cable offerings by product line, arranged from entry level (101 Speaker) to flagship (Clear Beyond), with a brief description explaining for whom each is intended. And I think we just used “whom” correctly… or is whom never correct? Who knows (whom knows?), we’re a cable company, not a grammar… place. We’re definitely not a grammar place. A brief explanation of Cardas Cable product lines. We offer nine distinct product lines of cables. Each product line contains at least one cable, and as many as seven. For example, 101 contains only a speaker cable. Parsec contains an interconnect, speaker, power, and a digital cable. All of our product lines feature conductors comprised of Cardas copper. Everything from Iridium and upward contains our finest copper: Cardas Grade 1 Ultra Pure . Our highest performing cables are part of the Clear range, and within the Clear Range are our top 5 product lines. People often ask if they have to stick within one product line? No. All Cardas cables "play well" with all of the rest. You can splurge on your speaker cable and the interconnect for your most used source component, and then pick something more economical for the gear you use less often. And Cardas cables play well with the cables from other manufacturers too. Bigger is not always better, and spending more doesn't necessarily give you better results. Some of the biggest, most expensive speakers will certainly perform at their best with our flagship Clear & Clear Beyond speaker cables. Likewise, Clear Beyond & Clear Beyond XL power cables will ensure that a big, power hungry amplifier will shine. But putting an extremely revealing (and expensive) cable on an entry-to-mid level system will not take it to the next level. Our entry level cables are not just more affordable. They're designed to accommodate for the inherent shortcomings of the gear with which they're paired. For example, AV surround systems tend to require a lot of cables, and therefore the cable budget can become an issue. However these systems also have a tendency to accentuate the higher frequencies, and can convey harshness that our 101 Speaker , Crosslink and Iridium cables can help smooth out. Whereas putting a Clear cable on such a system will just emphasize these issues - and also result in your cable investment exceeding the cost of the rest of the system. Our higher-end cables are created with the assumption that the equipment with which they're paired is designed with few if any compromises. They take for granted that the equipment is placed in a room designed with acoustics in mind. And that appropriate room treatments are in place to account for any acoustic issues. A high-end cable will not make your entry to mid level system perform like a high end system. And a cheap cable will make your high-end system sound very mid-Fi. Some of the worst sounding systems in the world have hundreds of thousands of dollars invested in speakers & components, hardware store wire for speaker cable, and an owner who swears cables don't matter. There are some analogies that can be drawn between cables and automobile tires. The tire designed for a Bugatti will not improve - and will likely degrade - the handling of a Honda Civic Si. Likewise, the tire designed for the Civic will ruin the handling of the Bugatti. Buy the correct tires for your car. And the right cables for your stereo. We hope this page gets you up to speed. Please contact us for any further clarification. Essay Below is a summary of our cable product lines, arranged from entry-level to flagship, with links to get more information about each one. Summary 101 Speaker Named after the state highway that runs through Bandon, Oregon , and also as a reference to a beginning level college course, 101 Speaker is our most affordable speaker cable. "Class, welcome to Cardas 101. This semester we're going to learn about cables." 101 Speaker features Cardas Grade 2 Copper, and can be purchased terminated with spades or bananas, or in bulk, to be cut, stripped, and prepared by your dealer, or even yourself. 101 Speaker can be used as a bare-wire cable, tinned, or terminated with connectors. 101 Speaker is ideal for small systems, bookshelf stereos, and surround sound systems in which so much speaker cabling is required that anything more expensive would result in the cable budget exceeding the price of the rest of the components. We do not offer a 101 interconnect, as the labor involved in terminating interconnects is too involved to keep it within the price point. However 101 Speaker pairs well with Crosslink Interconnect. Click here to learn more about 101 Speaker. Crosslink •Speaker •Interconnect Crosslink features Cardas Grade 2 Copper, and is intended for smaller systems, entry level systems, and AV surround sound systems. Crosslink Speaker & Interconnect can be purchased in bulk, or terminated at our factory. Crosslink Speaker can be used as a bare-wire cable, tinned, or terminated with connectors. In addition, Crosslink Speaker is CL2 rated, and can be legally run through walls. Click here to learn more about Crosslink. Iridium •Speaker •Interconnect •Phono •Power The Iridium Cables are our most economical to feature Cardas Grade 1 Ultra Pure Copper. This is the finest quality copper wire in the world, and is used in every Cardas cable from Iridium on up to our ultimate flagship cables. The Iridium cables can be used with great results on anything from mid-level to higher end systems. Iridium Speaker pairs well with highly efficient loudspeakers. Iridium Phono is our best selling phono cable. Iridium Power, while our smallest gauge power cable, exceeds the current capacity of every power cable packaged with every power amp on the market. Click here to learn more about Iridium. Parsec •Speaker •Interconnect •SPDIF Digital •Power •Headphone Parsec, while one of our more economically priced cables, is a very high end, high performance cable line. Parsec brings strong mid-range and smooth high frequencies, with excellent spatial imaging. Parsec cables can be said to have the most of the original Cardas DNA, in terms of being warm & musical, and taming the harshness of CDs & poorly recorded digital, or systems that accentuate the higher frequencies too much. Click here to learn more about Parsec. Clear Sky •Speaker •Interconnect Clear Sky is the beginning of the Clear product line. Clear uses Matched Propagation Conductors designed to be braided more quickly than the other conductors from this product line, making it more affordable, but without leaving a lot of performance on the table. Clear Sky cables are natural, neutral, and revealing. Click here to learn more about Clear Sky. Clear SE9 MP Speaker Clear SE9 MP is designed to bring Clear levels of performance to lower power single-ended tube amps and horn speakers. This is kind of a niche sub-section of audiophilia, and if these terms don't sound familiar, you're not in it 😂. However, Clear SE9 MP can certainly be used in any high-end system, specifically ones that employ smaller or highly efficient speakers. Not all bookshelf systems are entry level. Some are quite esoteric, and SE9 MP can be a great choice in these situations. We do not offer an interconnect with this product line, as these sorts of systems do not demand a specific sort of interconnect in the same way that they do with speaker cables. Therefore if you're using SE9 MP speaker cable, your choice of interconnect can range from entry level to flagship depending on the level of components in your system. Click here to learn more about Clear SE9 MP. Clear Cygnus •Speaker •Interconnect •Phono •Power Cygnus is our most popular amongst the Clear cables. Cygnus cables are neutral and transparent, with extended high frequency response, deep, tight bass, and spectacular imaging. While far more economical than it's big brothers, Cygnus is at home on even the most high performance and expensive of systems. Click here to learn more about Clear Cygnus. Clear Reflection •Speaker •Interconnect •Power •Headphone Clear Reflection is the outlier in the Clear Range, and not just because it's the only Clear cable that isn't blue. Reflection takes design geometry from our previous flagship cables, Golden Reference, and adds our latest Matched Propagation conductors. Whereas the rest of the Clear cables strive for the utmost in neutrality, Reflection gives you all of the dynamics and spatial imaging, but with a touch of warmth. Among other applications, Reflection is perfect for a no-compromise system placed within a less-than-ideal room. If you've assembled a dream-team of amps, speakers, and source components, but want to place that system in your home's main living space rather than an ideally designed & treated man-cave, Clear Reflection may well be the cable for you. If you spend hours listening to music rather than listening to your equipment , Clear Reflection may well be the cable for you. Click here to learn more about Clear Reflection. Clear •Speaker •Interconnect •Phono •Power •AES/EBU •SPDIF •USB •Headphone Clear is a product line unto itself, containing a variety of cables, and is also the parent name for our entire upper range, from Clear Sky to Clear Beyond. And it's our second from the top of the line within that range. Why so confusing? We can explain. When the original Clear Speaker & Interconnect were introduced, they were an entirely new direction for Cardas. They employed the first Matched Propagation Conductors , and reached a new level of performance not before seen (heard?) in audio cables. At the time, they sat at the top of our entire range. Over time, we developed new, faster ways of braiding Matched Propagation Conductors. We experimented with substituting slightly more economical dielectric materials to go around those conductors. And we realized that by doing so, we could develop cables that achieved much of the performance of the original Clear, at price points that were a bit easier on the budget. Which is why we now have Sky, Cygnus, and Reflection. And going in the other direction, we pushed the envelope, and developed more complicated conductors that eked out even more detail from pristine recordings, and surrounded those conductors with dielectric materials and cable geometries that took a no-compromise approach. And thus we created the Clear Beyond product line. To use an automotive analogy, Clear is the Ferrari that everybody and their brother knows about and lusts after. Clear Beyond is the unattainable Ferrari that looks a lot like the other Ferraris, but it's really special and only true Ferrari guys recognize it. And they lose their freaking minds when they see one. But hey, even that "everyman" Ferrari is an insanely nice car. Likewise, Clear is an insanely nice cable line. Click here to learn more about Clear . Clear Beyond •Speaker •Interconnect •Phono •Power •Headphone Clear Beyond. Our zero-compromise, pushing the envelope, aspirational, incredible, ultra high performance, lives up to the hype, cable line. The Clear Beyond cables are intended for the highest performance components in acoustically perfect environments. Click here to learn more about Clear Beyond.

  • Bi-Wire Jumpers | Cardas Audio

Cardas bi-wire jumpers offer several options for bridging your speaker's high & low frequency binding posts. Bi-Wire Jumpers Clear Bi-Wire Jumpers 9 AWG Bi-Wire Jumpers 11 AWG Bi-Wire Jumpers Stamped Bi-Wire Jumpers Clear Bi-Wire Jumpers Clear Jumpers Our flagship bi-wire jumpers. Iridium "Over the last year I’ve been assembling my first serious hifi system. I was just using some bulk wire from the hardware store on my speakers, and didn’t think anything of it. I went to the hifi show in Tampa and realized that there’s an entire world of cables out there. I asked my friends in the hobby, and several mentioned I should try Cardas. I decided to try a pair of Iridium speaker cables, and I was really impressed. My system become fuller, with more detail. And somehow I couldn’t stop listening to it. And things got even better as I upgraded to Iridium XLR cables, and an Iridium power cable.” -B. Copper & Silver Strand Connectors Cardas Solder& Flux Bulk Cable & Chassis Wire Custom Cables OEM FAQ OEM Application Metals Copper & Silver Strand Cardas Copper & Silver strand is produced using a proprietary method developed by George Cardas prior to the founding of Cardas Audio. Cardas Grade 1 Ultra Pure Copper is used in nearly all of our cables, and also by other cable & equipment manufacturers. In fact, there are laboratories in the US & Europe using our copper for its superior electrical and thermal conductive properties. Cardas Grade 2 Copper is a more affordable variant, but still of extremely high quality, and produced using similar methods. Grade 2 can be found in our own 101 Speaker and Crosslink cables. Grade 2 is also used throughout the audio industry. Cardas Silver is used in Clear Beyond Headphone Cable , and is very popular with other high-end cable and electronics manufacturers. We electrically etched away the outer layer of several copper strands manufactured using differing methods, to demonstrate that the perfect grain structure of Cardas Grade 1 extends below the surface. How to buy: Cardas copper & silver strand is typically sold by the pound, and long lead times may apply. We have a limited variety of gauges in house, If we have the AWG you want in stock, you may purchase as little or as much as you wish. However if you need a gauge of copper or silver that we do not have in stock, the minimum production run is between 200 and 800 pounds, depending on the gauge. For even more reading about Cardas Copper, click here . Bulk Bulk Cable & Chassis Wire Cardas bulk cable & chassis wire is sold by the foot. Or the meter, but you gotta do the math. New manufacturer's accounts must meet a minimum opening order, but subsequent orders are not subject to minimums. Pricing for manufacturers is based on the quantity purchased, with price breaks at 25, 250, and 500 feet. Click here for more information about Cardas bulk cable & chassis wire. To apply for Cardas Audio's OEM program, please fill out the form at this link . Connectors Cardas Connectors Cardas connectors are sold by the unit. New manufacturers must meet a minimum opening order, but subsequent orders are not subject to minimums. Pricing for manufacturers is based on quantity, with price breaks at 25 and 250 units. Binding posts are a common cause of confusion! We often refer to a "unit" as a pair. A pair of binding posts is a positive & a negative post, with a rectangular insulator to hold them together. So it's a "pair" in the same sense that pants are sold as "pairs". For two speakers, you'll need two pairs of posts. Likewise, the back of a stereo amplifier would require two pairs of posts. The parts shown below are all single units. Order a quantity of one (1) of any of them, and you'll receive what you see in the image: Custom Custom Cables Cardas Audio can produce a custom cable for your company. Custom cables have a minimum order quantity of at least 2000 feet, and may take up to 6 months to produce. "Wow, that's a lot of cable and a long time to wait" We agree. Welcome to the cable business. It's slow and expensive. To produce a custom cable, we need a detailed design (an engineering drawing, preferably). We are not able to produce a cable based on a general description or vague specifications. Due to the large minimum order quantity, associated costs, and long lead time, the vast majority of our customers accomplish what they need with our bulk cables or chassis wire . If you have any questions about custom cable production, or how to utilize our bulk cable & chassis wire for your application, please contact Brian in our tech department at 541-347-2484. FAQ OEM FAQ Who qualifies for an OEM account? We're pretty easy in this regard. New manufacturers, established manufacturers, start ups, big companies, small companies.... Moving from the garage to a full fledged facility? Or just a slightly larger garage? As long as you're intending to use our parts and/or materials in your productions, then you probably qualify. Our main requirement is that you meet our minimum opening (first) order of $500 USD or more. What restrictions do you place on OEM customers? Manufacturers may not re-sell Cardas items to retail customers. If you're running a store (online or physical), and want to sell our parts, bulk cables, and chassis wire, please apply as a store owner, not as a manufacturer. You may inform your customers that you are using Cardas products in your designs. We're happy for you to do that. However, please do not claim that your offerings are Cardas products. We have had manufacturers buy our wire & connectors, make their own cables, and sell those cables as Cardas Audio cables. Which is not really honest. That would be like buying a bunch of BMW parts, assembling a car of your own design, and claiming that it's a BMW. Can I buy Cardas retail cables in bulk? For the most part, no. The exceptions being 101 Speaker , and Crosslink Speaker & Crosslink Interconnect . Those are available both as finished, retail cables from Cardas, and also in bulk to OEM & DIY customers. The rest of our retail cables (Iridium, Parsec, Clear, etc.) are not available for purchase in bulk. Can Cardas Audio help me design a custom cable, and then produce it for me? We can provide suggestions, however if you want a bulk cable, but you're not sure how to design a cable, then you're far better off working with our bulk cable & chassis wire offerings. Can Cardas produce custom connectors or other parts for me? Yes. If you want a connector that is similar to one we already produce, we can probably make the changes you require. If you want a custom connector that is nothing like what we already produce, then... maybe? Keep in mind that custom connectors (modifications or completely new designs) face a minimum order in the 1000's. And if it isn't something we can use ourselves, then you're on the hook for all of them. Much like with custom cables, nearly everybody is better off using connectors we already produce. Can I buy non-Cardas connectors, such as Neutrik XLRs? Or Heatshrink? No. We only sell our own parts & supplies. We use Neutrik & Furutech connectors on some of our cables. But we do not sell these items separately. By the same token, we use Heatshrink tubing on our cables, but we do not sell shrink tubing. And before you ask, we absolutely do not sell Cardas logo heat shrink. Does (some company) use Cardas (parts/wire/stuff) in their products? That's up to them to reveal that information. If they claim it, and you're not sure that they actually do, ask us and we'll let you know. But we do not provide the names of our customers to other customers. Why did you stop making (some part)? Demand, or lack thereof. We manufacture parts 1000 to 2000 units at a time. For some, such as our SRCA male RCA connector, we do that two or three times a year. For others, 1000 units might be a ten year supply. When we're nearing the end of a batch of parts that took 10 years to sell, we have to ask ourselves if it makes sense to do it again. And sometimes the answer is "nope". What happened to lead-free Cardas roll solder? Nobody wanted it so we stopped making it. Lead is deadly, but.... wow does it make good solder. Is Cardas Quad Eutectic Solder considered a "silver" solder? While it contains silver, we don't promote it as a silver solder. In fact, it was developed when we realized that silver solders weren't up to the task of terminating Cardas cables. Cardas Quad Eutectic outperforms silver-heavy solder, as it is a proprietary blend of silver, copper, tin, and lead. The four elements are in specific proportion to melt and solidify uniformly, cooling to a clean and shiny connection that lasts.

  • Re-Termination & Warranty Service | Cardas Audio

Cardas cables last forever. Which could be a problem, since your equipment might change. Fortunately, Cardas cables can be re-terminated with new connectors to suit your changing needs. And our lifetime warranty is there if you never have an issue. Obtain a return authorization to get a quote, and to send your cables in for service. Top Re-Termination, Repair, Warranty, & Authentication Service Click the button to fill out our Return Authorization Form, to initiate the process of having your cable re-terminated or repaired. Or read more about re-terminations and warranty service below. This form can be used for sending any Cardas product in for service, cable or otherwise. Return Authorization Form Our lifetime warranty We offer a lifetime warranty on our cables. In the unlikely event that your Cardas cables develops a functionality issue, please send it to us for repair. Just obtain a Return Authorization Number at this link , and follow the instructions. Before doing so, you're welcome to contact Cardas tech support for trouble-shooting guidance. Although the problem may be the cable, cable problems are exceedingly rare. It is not uncommon for somebody assume (or hope) that a cable is the source of a problem, send it to us for service, the cables tests perfectly, and they then realize that the actual problem is with one of their components. Perhaps wishful thinking is at play - it's a lot easier to send a cable in for service than it is to send a heavy amplifier or a delicate turntable. Our tech support advisor may be able to help you determine if the problem is truly with the cable. What is covered by the warranty? Bad or intermittent internal connections. Shorts. Loose connectors. General functionality & listenability issues. Nearly anything that can go wrong with a cable through no fault of the user. What is not? Wear and tear, such as scratched plating. Bent or broken banana plugs. Cosmetic issues. Animal damage. Vacuum cleaner damage. Re-terminations Our shop can re-terminate (ie, change the connectors on) your Cardas cables, should your needs change. • If you have a long pair of cables, we can cut & re-terminate it into two (or more) shorter pairs. • If you buy a new set of headphones, we can modify your Cardas headphone cable to work with them. • If you move from the US to Europe, we can put Shucko plugs on your Cardas power cables. • If you buy speakers with bi-wire binding posts, we can bi-wire your single-wire Cardas speaker cables. • If you switch from a balanced system to single-ended, we can change your Cardas interconnects from XLR to RCA. Or vice-versa. Nearly any Cardas cable can be modified in nearly any way. Note - we only service Cardas cables. If you have cables made by another manufacturer, they can perform this service for you. To begin the process of having your Cardas cables re-terminated, fill out the form at this link , and we'll contact you with a quote. Can't I repair or re-terminate my cables myself, or have a local shop do it? It's your cable, so yeah, do what you want. But we're glad to honor our warranty if your cable develops and issue. And if we repair or re-terminate your cable, your lifetime warranty remains intact. If Cardas cables are serviced elsewhere, the warranty becomes void. Keep in mind that we use Litz conductors. Even the most experienced technician or talented solder-ist (is that a word?) is unlikely to have much if any experience with this sort of wire. Most cables attempted to be serviced outside of our shop end up here anyway. So why not skip that frustrating and disappointing middle step? My cable has a problem, but I also want it re-terminated to different connectors. Can that be done under warranty? Our warranty polic y is pretty liberal, but it is limited to restoring your cable to its original state. In other words, if your headphone cable for Sennheiser HD800s develops a short, but you also want it re-terminated for use with Focal headphones, that is not a warranty repair. If your RCA interconnect has an issue, but you also want it switched to XLR, again, not a warranty situation. Authentication Service If you have cables that you would like us to inspect and authenticate, please fill out the form above, as you would for a re-termination or repair. Please be advised that cables deemed to be counterfeit will be indelibly marked and/or branded, and returned. If you purchased second hand cables and you doubt their authenticity, your best option is to return them for a refund from the seller.
